heyheyhey
haha so fun:D
was looking through this website to find more about vietnam in 1972
then i realised that 1972 was the year that alot of things took place.
So im going to summarise what i have just read:)
25th January 1972
President Nixon, president of the United States, proposes a eight point peace plan for vietnam. Only to have it rejected by Hanoi.
21st February 1972
President Nixon meets MaoZeDong and ZhouEnLai in China to forge new diplomatic relations. Vietnam feared that their wartime ally might be inclined to agree to an unfavourable settlement of the war to improve diplomatic relations between China and US.
23rd March 1972
US boycotts Paris Peace Talks as President Nixon accuses Vietnam of not taking the negotiation seriously.
March-September 1972
Easterside Offensive- 200,000 North Vietnamese troops wage an all-out-war to conquer South Vietnam under the command of General Vo Nguyen Giap. but there was another reason why they wanted to wage a war. This was to harm President Nixon politically during the presidential election that year. they believed that Nixon's removal would disrupt Nixons aid to the South America.
4th April 1972
President Nixon authorises a massive bombing campaign on NVA troops invading South Vietnam. Unleashing B-52 air strikes on North Vietnam themselves.
"The bastards have never been bombed like they're going to bombed this time," Nixon privately declares.
17th June 1972
Five burglars are arrested inside the Watergate building while attempting to plant hidden microphones in the Democratic National Committee offices. Subsequent investigations will reveal they have ties to the Nixon White House.
28th June 1972
South Vietnamese troops begin a counter-offensive to retake Quang Tri Province, aided by U.S. Navy gunfire and B-52 bombardments.
16th September
Quang Tri City is recaptured by South Vietnamese troops.
29th September 1972
Heavy U.S. air raids against airfields in North Vietnam destroy 10 percent of their air force.
22nd October 1972
During the failed offensive, the North suffered an estimated 100,000 military casualties and lost half its tanks and artillery. General Vo Nguyen Giap, the victor at Dien Bien Phu, was then quietly ousted in favor of his deputy Gen. Van Tien Dung. 40,000 South Vietnamese soldiers died stopping the offensive, in the heaviest fighting of the entire war.
As you can see, most of these battles started beacuse of jealousy, because of greed, because of competetiveness. And becuase of these, thousands and perhaps even millions of innocent people have died, fighting for a wrong cause.
this thought sparked into a fire and it got me thinking about many things. Why would people want to fight? Why must people just resolve their differences by fighting? And does fighting really help to resolve differences?
From what i see, fighting doesn't even help to calm the situation. however, it makes matters worse. Hence isn't it paradoxical that the one thing people do to resolve differences is also the one thing that can lead to more destruction?
In conclusion, i feel that now, in Singapore, we are really fortunate.
Having a roof to house ourselves when others have to live in slums,
having a table to sit down where we can enjoy our meals together as a family when others have to go to beg for food everyday,
having a bed where we can sleep in when others have to lie in dumps.
Then i realised that these little little things that we take for granted are the little little things that can change a person's life.
Joash,
faith
sees the invisible..
feels the intangible..
does the impossible
